Kelp (Laminaria hyperborea) is a  large brown seaweed that forms forests underwater. Like leaf fall of deciduous trees on land, they shed their fronds in autumn to rid themselves of waste products and surface growth. As a consequence, by October when this photo was taken they were looking a little shabby. Photographed freediving at Caerfai Bay, St David’s.
